Summary

PMI Chapter Student Clubs is a new initiative that supports partnerships between local PMI Chapters and university student clubs to welcome students into the PMI community and support their academic and professional growth. 

We’re excited to announce this unique scholarship, designed to empower students affiliated with these designated PMI chapters and their student clubs. Successful applicants will receive financial support for their tuition, to encourage and support their academic achievements. 

PMI Chapter Student Club Scholarships provides financial assistance for tuition to students who are actively engaged with their local PMI Chapter Student Club. 

Three (3) scholarships of US$500 are awarded annually and paid directly to the academic institution.

Requirements: The Chapter must have formally requested to be part of the PMI Chapter Student Club Program before 29 February 2024. Applicants will be validated by their PMI Chapter leader.  Chapters must provide confirm students’ eligibility for the scholarship by close of scholarship date.
 

1. Eligibility Criteria

All applicants for PMI Scholarships must…

  • Be currently enrolled or will be enrolled by Fall 2024 in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD program in project management or a project management related field of study with a graduation date on or after November 2024.                                                  
    • Undergraduate students must be enrolled and classified by the university as a full-time student.
    • Graduate students must be enrolled and classified by the university as at least a half-time student. 
    • Be eligible to receive scholarship funds exclusively through the enrolled academic institution and not as a direct disbursement from PMI to the individual.
    • Be in good standing the enrolled academic institution’s policies and procedures. 
    • Be in compliance with PMI policies and procedures, including but not limited to PMI's Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.
    • Not be a current PMI employee, contractor, and/or consultant.
    • Not be the family member of a current PMI employee, contractor, and/or consultant.
    • Not be a current sitting member of any global volunteer group. 
    • Not be a current sitting member of PMI and/or PMIEF’s Board of Directors.

      
     

2. Application Process and Required Documents 

To complete the application process, applicants must have or create a Submittable account. Applicants must complete the process and submit all required documents in the platform.

Applicants should prepare the following documents in English* to meet requirements:

  • Electronic  transcripts (official + unofficial) from the applicant’s current or most recently attended college, university, or other tertiary educational institution that clearly shows the program of study in PDF format.                                                  
    • If applicant is not currently enrolled but will begin by Fall 2024, an acceptance letter must be submitted for the application at minimum; an official proof of enrollment that clearly shows the program of study must be       submitted if selected for a scholarship. Proof of enrollment for the 2024-2025 academic year, if not shown on transcripts.
    • Curriculum Vitae (CV) or resume.
    • Two (2) letters of recommendation on official letter head. One of these letter should be from a Chapter board member or Chapter Leader.
    • Respond to the two (2) short essay questions included in the application process 

     

1) How have you actively contributed to the goals and initiatives of your PMI Chapter Student Club? Provide specific examples of your involvement (500 word limit)

2) Share a significant impact or positive change that resulted from your participation in local chapter activities? (500 word limit)

* as part of a Chapter Student Clubs Scholarship pilot, applications in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese will be accepted. Indicate the language you are applying in when prompted. Communications regarding scholarship status will be only in English. 


 

3. Selection Process and Criteria 

All eligible applicants who successfully complete the application process and submit the required documents will be evaluated PMI volunteer reviewers. Current PMI employees, contractors, and consultants; family members of PMI employees, contractors, and consultants; current sitting members of a global volunteer group; and sitting members of PMI’s & PMIEF Board of Directors may not participate in the nomination or evaluation process.

Applicants will be reviewed by a panel of volunteers. The review panelists score each applicant based on the quality of the content of the essays and review of letters of recommendation using the points-based system outlined in an approved rubric. 

All decisions by the review committee are final and any attempts by applicants to lobby or persuade the committee during the process will result in immediate disqualification. 

 

4. Scholarship Amounts and Terms

Scholarship amounts vary by fund and year. Each recipient will receive a letter that specifies the scholarship and amount. Each scholarship is for only one (1) academic year. Successful applicants will be awarded only one (1) PMI scholarship, award or grant per academic year. After submission, your scholarship will be screened to ensure you have met the eligibility criteria outlined above. The reviewing process begins after the scholarship deadline on 01 May 2024. The time it takes to complete the review process may vary each year depending on the volume of applications we receive. However, applicants can anticipate receiving a response by no later than July 15, 2024.

Chosen scholarship recipients will receive a message through Submittable that they have been selected. This message will also provide instructions for the next steps to submit the final required documents before officially receiving the award, including tax forms, signature for press release, and any other documents that are required but not yet submitted, such as a transcript and/or proof of enrollment. 

Tax forms must be completed by the chosen recipient in coordination with their academic institution’s financial aid or similar office. PMI does not make direct payments to recipients, as mentioned section 1. Eligibility Criteria. Please consult with your academic institution for the process and policy for receiving scholarship funds.

The scholarship is not officially awarded until finalists return the required documents. Chosen recipients will have three weeks from the date of notification to submit the requested documents. If documents are not submitted before the deadline, the scholarship offer will be withdrawn. Exceptions to this policy will be considered on a case-by-case basis if extenuating circumstances are demonstrated.

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Two academic reference letters should be provided on official letterhead from staff, faculty, professor, and/or a professional reference. This excludes family, local authority, and community leaders. Each reference must be 1 page maximum.
  • Short Essay: From the list, select an ERG which aligns to an interest or identity you have. Employee Resource Groups (ERG) are a part of PMI's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. To coincide with the ERG that you selected, tell us how individuals represented by this particular ERG community can thrive in the project management profession, the barriers they face and the steps you and others can take to support this community in reducing those barriers. Selection Process for Scholarships
All completed applications accompanied by all required supporting materials will be evaluated the PMI volunteer reviewers. Applicants will be scored using a point system based on the quality of the content of the essay, the student’s academic performance, review of letters of recommendation and the alignment of a candidate’s coursework to the field of project management.

All decisions by the review committee are final and any attempts by applicants to lobby or persuade the committee during the process will result in immediate disqualification.

*All scholarship finalists are screened against the Specially Designated Nationals List (SDN) of the United States Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control.

Award Guidelines for Academic Scholarships
To be eligible for scholarship payment, applicants must provide written proof of enrollment in the program for which a scholarship is sought before the funds are released.  Proof of enrollment must be sent directly to PMI from the college or university at which the applicant plans to use the scholarship, and generally takes the form of a letter from the registrar’s office.  Instructions for submission of proof of enrollment will be provided to successful applicants.  Proof of enrollment must document the following:

  • Enrollment in the current academic semester
  • Undergraduate—full time
  • Graduate—full time or at least half time.
  • Program of study must be identified.
  • The scholarship is for only one (1) academic year. The academic year for which the scholarship is provided will be identified in the award.
  • Successful applicants will be awarded only one (1) PMI scholarship, award or grant per academic year.
  • Unless specified otherwise, applicants may submit a new scholarship application for each academic year during which they will be attending an accredited institution in a degree-granting program.
     

Notice of Academic Scholarship

  • The scholarship payment will be sent to the University directly on behalf of students. 
  • Notice to scholarship finalists will be sent via email to the address provided on the application.
  • PMI will require final enrollment verification, educational records and signature of promotional release. The scholarship is not officially awarded until finalists return the required documents.
  • Final notice of awarded scholarships will be sent to each finalist via email after verification is complete.
  • Applicants who are awarded an academic scholarship will have three weeks from the date of notification to submit proof of enrollment and tax forms. If documentation is not submitted before the deadline, the scholarship offer will be withdrawn. Exceptions to this policy will be considered on a case-by-case basis if extenuating circumstances are demonstrated.
     

Purpose

The PMI Young Researcher Award recognizes and celebrates an emerging leader in the academic field of project, program, and/or portfolio management with potential achievements to make a significant impact on the field and practice.

Eligibility

The nominees:

  • May self-nominate or be nominated.
  • Must be 35 years old or younger during year of nomination.
  • Preference is given to nominees who have not previously received an award from PMI.
  • May come from a discipline other than project management, but research must contribute significantly to the development of project, program, and/or portfolio management.
  • Must come from an accredited college/university or academic research institution.

Criteria

  • Nominee’s research contributes to the theory of project, program, and/or portfolio management.
  • This can be demonstrated through published works, particularly those subjected to peer-review; examples include journal articles, conference papers, books or book chapters, peer-reviewed keynote presentations, and invited contributions.
  • The nominee’s research is motivated by real problems, and contributes to the practice of project, program, and/or portfolio management.
  • A preference will be given to those candidates who demonstrate the successful application of research outcomes in practice, or contribution to knowledge through extraction of learning from practice.

Not Eligible

  • Sitting members of PMI’s Board of Directors are ineligible. In addition, they may not participate in the nomination or evaluation process.
  • Sitting members of PMI’s Academic Insight Team are not eligible.
  • Current PMI staff and consultants are not eligible.
  • Individuals who have failed to comply with PMI policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, PMI's Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.

Number of Awards

  • One Young Researcher Award will be granted annually.
  • PMI reserves the right not to select a recipient for a particular year.

Nomination Procedures and Content

The application must include the following:

  • Basic information about the nominator and the nominee, including contact information, educational background, relationship of nominator/nominee and how long nominator has known nominee.
  • A 750-word (maximum) statement of the nominee’s achievements and their potential to make a significant impact on the academic field of project management.
  • A 750-word (maximum) statement of how the nominee’s research is motivated by real problems and can contribute to the practice of project, program, and/or portfolio management.
  • A preference will be given to those candidates who demonstrate the successful application of research outcomes in practice, or contribution to knowledge through extraction of learning from practice.
  • Nominee’s curriculum vitae.
  • Two letters of recommendation, from a person other than the nominator, identifying the rationale and significant potential of the nominee’s research.

Applications will not be reviewed if:

  • Written in a language other than English (including recommendation letters, etc.)
  • Application package is incomplete
  • Received after the submission deadline

Verification and Selection

Final selection of the winning nomination will be based on the application package and will be made by a panel of senior researchers in project management. These experts will place emphasis on the potential of the nominee’s research to make a significant impact on the field and practice of project management. Award recipients will be notified via email.

Presentation of the Award

  • The Young Researcher Award will be presented at a designated project management event.
  • The award recipient will be publicized through PMI communication channels and external media after the presentation of the award. The recipient may also coordinate additional publicity with PMI after the presentation of the award.

Additional Information

  • PMI will not reimburse any expenses for assembling the nomination or presentation materials.
  • PMI reserves the right within its sole discretion, and at any time up to the time of the presentation of the award, to determine that a candidate is or has become ineligible for the award. In any such case, PMI will notify the lead nominator and the candidate of its decision as soon as possible prior to the award presentation.

Purpose 

This award recognizes excellence in a student research paper advancing an original concept related the management of projects. Nominees are selected based upon the research and originality including current and future developments that will maximize project success.

Submission Deadline

The call for nominations for the 2024 Awards will open on 29 February closing 29 April 2024.

Eligibility

To be considered, the research paper must: 

  • Have been written within the last two calendar years while the nominee was a student in good standing at an institute of higher learning;
  • Be an original academic research paper focused on maximizing project success and advancing the project management profession; and
  • Be (or have been) written by a single author or co-authored with an active faculty advisor (supervisor) at the time of its completion.
  • The nominee(s) is not required to be a PMI member.

Not Eligible

  • Sitting members of PMI/PMIEF Board of Directors may not participate in the nomination or evaluation process and are ineligible to receive this award.
  • Current sitting members of PMI’s Academic Insight Team (AIT) are ineligible to receive this award during their tenure on the AIT.
  • Current PMI staff and consultants.
  • Individuals who have failed to comply with PMI policies and procedures, including but not limited to PMI's Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, will not be considered.

  • One James R. Snyder Award will be granted annually.

Criteria

  • Criteria 1: Enriched knowledge by distilling insights from practical experiences.  
  • Criteria 2: Published work which has been subjected to peer-review in the individual’s area of expertise that have the potential to contribute to project management practice. Examples include journal articles, conference papers, books or book chapters, and peer-reviewed keynote presentations and invited contributions. 
  • Criteria 3: The publication must have been published within the previous two calendar years.  
  • Criteria 4: Should present a pragmatic approach and solutions to current and future project management issues that will maximize project success.

Final selection of the winning papers will be made by a panel of experts in project management. These experts will place emphasis on originality of presented concept(s), applicability to the field of project management, how the concept will maximizing project success including practical applications of the concept.


Award recipients will be notified via email. PMI reserves the right to elect not to present an award on the basis of papers received.

Presentation of the Award

  • The James R. Snyder Student Paper Award will be presented at PMI’s Awards Gala taking place at that year’s Global Summit.
  • The award recipient will be publicized through PMI communication channels and external media after the presentation of the award. The recipient may also coordinate additional publicity with PMI after the presentation of the award
  • Recipients of the James R. Snyder Student Paper Award will receive US$500 in total for the paper submitted.

Purpose

The PMI Research Achievement Award recognizes and honors an individual whose work has significantly advanced the concepts, knowledge, and practices of project management through a published body of academic research.

Eligible

  • The nominee must have made a significant contribution to the advancement of the field of project management through academic research.
  • The nominee is not required to be a PMI member.
  • The nominee may work in any type of organization: corporate, government, nonprofit, or academic.
  • Though impactful research tends to be a collective endeavor, the award is a researcher award, not a team award. As such, it is given to only one individual to recognize this individual researcher’s exceptional contributions to the field of project management.

Not Eligible 

  • Sitting members of PMI’s Board of Directors may not participate in the nomination or evaluation process and are ineligible to receive this award.
  • Sitting members of PMI’s Academic Insight Team (AIT) are ineligible to receive this award during their tenure on the AIT.
  • Current PMI staff and consultants.
  • Individuals who have previously received this award within the last 10 years.

The nominee(s) shall have met the following criteria: 

  • Criterion 1: The nominee must have significantly advanced the concepts, knowledge, and practices that contribute to the project management field through a published body of academic research.
  • Criterion 2 (Scientific Contribution): The research must have an enduring theoretical, empirical, or practical value. 

Role of the Nominator 

  • The nominee must be nominated by one or more persons.
  • When more than one person supports the nomination, a Lead Nominator must be designated who collects and submits all nomination materials and serves as the point of contact for the nomination.

Nomination Procedures and Content

The nomination must contain the following: 

  • The CV of the nominee with complete list of publications.
  • A description of the body of research on which the nomination is based and its contribution toward advancing the field of project management.
  • An explanation of how the nominee's work has significantly advanced the conceptions, knowledge, and practices of the project management field.
  • Evidence of the enduring theoretical, empirical, or practical value of the nominee's work.
  • Letters of support (1 page maximum each) from each nominator explaining their rationale for supporting the nominee for the award. If a nominator has a direct personal or professional relationship with the nominee, this should be disclosed in the nominator's letter. All letters should be signed and dated.

Nominations will not be reviewed if:

  • Written in a language other than English
  • Nomination Package is incomplete
  • Received after the submission deadline

Nominations must be submitted by 29 April 2024.

  • PMI Academic Programs will:
    Verify the nominee’s eligibility and that all required materials have been submitted.

Purpose

The PMI Linn Stuckenbruck Teaching Excellence Award recognizes and honors an individual faculty member for excellence in teaching project management, and for their strong commitment to improving and enhancing project management curricula in higher education.

The award is named in honor of Dr. Stuckenbruck, who served as Secretary on the PMI Board of Directors and received the Distinguished Service Award in 1980. He contributed to management and technical journals, wrote chapters for five published books, and presented papers at many professional society meetings. He also authored books and handbooks, including The Implementation of Project Management: The Professional's Handbook.

Eligibility

  • The nominee holds a faculty rank in an accredited university or has been an adjunct faculty for at least three years on a continuous basis prior the application.
  • The nominee must be the sole instructor or the instructor teaching at least 75% of the content in credit-bearing courses in the case of team teaching.
  • The nominee may teach either at the undergraduate or graduate level. The courses should be focused on project management.
  • The nominee is not required to be a PMI member.

Not Eligible

  • Sitting members of PMI’s Board of Directors may not participate in the nomination or evaluation process and are ineligible to receive this award.
  • Sitting members of PMI’s Academic Insight Team (AIT).
  • Current PMI staff and consultants.
  • Previous recipients of the PMI Linn Stuckenbruck Teaching Excellence Award.

Nomination Procedures and Content

The nomination package must be provided in English and contain the following:

  • Curriculum Vitae (not to exceed 10 pages) focused on the nominee’s teaching, educational leadership, achievements and other contributions to teaching and learning, as distinct from a standard CV pertaining to the nominee’s field of expertise.
  • The nominee’s university website link and the related page of the website.
  • The names of relevant project management courses (with university assigned course IDs) taught and the link to university website for the course.
  • Description of his/her teaching in the past three years and demonstration of the changes and innovations in teaching.
  • A course portfolio showing the following (for the project management course taught by the nominee)  a) Nominee’s teaching philosophy (maximum one page).
    b) The most recent detailed course syllabus. The syllabus should include the course content, course delivery method, and the course evaluation method. c) The minimum, maximum and average performance (sample work) of the students (with students names removed) for the past three years. This can include project work or assessment of student performance in the final exam.
  • The nomination may contain information related to multiple courses taught by the nominee. In such a case, a narrative should be included highlighting the specific and related aspects of those courses.
  • Other artifacts may be submitted (such as up to a 5 minute video of a class lecture and interactions, session plan, innovative teaching process, and teaching evaluations). In such a case, a narrative should be included highlighting the specific aspects of those artifacts.
  • Three Letters of Support (1 page maximum each) The support letters can be written by a student (or from a student club), an alumna/alumnus, a peer faculty member, peer teaching evaluation body of the university or anybody familiar with the teaching of the nominee. The letter of support should contain the following: a) Evidence of the success of the nominee’s teaching b) Specific examples showing the nominee’s fulfilment of the award criteria.  One letter of recommendation must come from the department chair or program director of the division in which the nominee teaches or the dean of the college.
    All letters should be signed and dated.

Purpose


The PMI David I. Cleland Project Management Literature Award recognizes the author(s) of a published book that significantly advances project management knowledge, concepts, and practice.

Dr. Cleland has contributed to PMI in countless ways, including moderating the PMI Body of Knowledge Workshop in 1985, finalizing the development of the PMI Student Paper Award Program, and attending and presenting at almost all PMI Seminars & Symposia since 1972. He is an author and editor of over 44 books and articles published in many technologies, management, and educational journals and periodicals.

Guidelines and Nomination Procedures

Eligible

  • The nominated book must have been published in English during the previous calendar year in a field relevant to project management.
  • The book may come from academic or practitioner literature. 
  • The author(s) of the nominated book need not be a PMI member.
  • For books that are not first editions, only the substantive changes since the preceding edition will be considered as eligible material. In this case, the new material must be highlighted as part of the nomination packet. 

Not Eligible

  • Sitting members of PMI’s Board of Directors are ineligible. In addition, they may not participate in the nomination or evaluation process.
  • Sitting members of PMI’s Academic Insight Team (AIT) are ineligible to receive this award during their tenure on the AIT.
  • A book authored or co-authored by current PMI staff.
  • A book authored by a PMI consultant, the content of which is based on the contracted work/activity.
  • Textbooks are not eligible for the award.
  • Edited books are not eligible for the award.
  • Standards of accrediting bodies, including those of PMI.
  • Individuals or organizations that have failed to comply with PMI policies and procedures, including but not limited to PMI's Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.

  • In the case of a co-authored book, each author will be recognized.

Criteria

  • Criterion 1: The nominated book contributes important knowledge, ideas and techniques which are likely to have a lasting influence. The book develops concepts, techniques and outcomes and is likely to become an important point of reference in project management or the sub-field of the book.
  • Criterion 2: The book has the potential to impact practice. The impact ranges from direct application to policy and/or practice to influencing perspectives.
  • Criterion 3: The argument, line of reasoning or analysis is sound and effectively presented.

Role of the Nominator

  • The book must be nominated by one or more persons, one of who must be a current PMI member in good standing or by a publisher.
  • When more than one person is making the nomination, a Lead Nominator must be designated who assembles and submits the nomination.

The Donald S. Barrie Award is for a research paper which advances the PMBOK ® Guide in the field of design, procurement and/or construction by providing a practical contribution to the engineering and construction industries In general, the paper should present a pragmatic approach and solutions to current engineering and construction issues. 

Eligibility

  • Students, researchers, and practitioners are eligible to submit papers to advance the PMBOK Guide in the field of design, procurement and/or construction by providing a practical contribution to the engineering and construction industry.
  • The paper should present a pragmatic approach to engineering and construction issues.
  • The paper is to be focused on one or more of the following areas:

                        - Engineering and construction means and methods

                        -       Project organizations and delivery systems   

                        -       Engineering and construction performance

                        -      Cost, schedule and progress controls

                        -      Design

                        -      Strategies, risks, challenges, advances and issues related to contracts and procurement in                     design, engineering and construction.


Not Eligible

  • Sitting members of PMI/PMIEF Board of Directors may not participate in the nomination or evaluation process and are ineligible to receive this award.

  • Criterion 2: Published work which has been subjected to peer-review in the individual’s area of expertise that have contributed to the practice of the project management field. Examples include journal articles, conference papers, books or book chapters, and peer-reviewed keynote presentations and invited contributions.
  • Criteria 3: The publication must have been published within the previous two years. 
  • Criteria 4: Should present a pragmatic approach and solutions to current engineering and construction issues with a focus on Design Procurement and Construction.
  • Criteria 5: Evidence of the significance of the published work which can include, but not limited, citations, mentions, non-PMI recognition/ awards, etc.

  • Explanation of the contribution that this paper makes to advance the PMBOK ® Guide in the field of design, procurement and/or construction by providing a useful contribution to the engineering and construction industry. (500 word max)

Verification and Selection

Final selection of the winning papers will be made by a panel of experts in project management. These experts will place emphasis on originality of presented concept(s), applicability to the field of project management, and practical applications of the concept.   Award recipients will be notified via email. PMI/PMIEF reserves the right to elect not to present an award on the basis of papers received.

Presentation of the Award

  • The Donald S. Barrie Award will be presented at PMI’s Awards Gala taking place at that year’s Global Summit.

Donald S. Barrie had a distinguished professional career in the construction industry:

  • B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA;
  • Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Washington and several construction licenses;
  • Vice President of the General Construction Division of (ICF) Kaiser Engineers of Oakland, CA; (ICF) Kaiser Engineers—34 years; President, CM Consultants—12 years;
  • Co-authored and edited several books in construction management, including; Professional Construction Management—1st, 2nd, 3rd Editions Directions In Managing Construction;
  • Construction Management Instruction at University of California, Berkley; Stanford University, Mission College, Santa Clara, CA and St. Mary's College, Moraga, CA

Mr. Barrie also had a distinguished career of service to his profession:

  • Member of the Project Management Institute from 1977 until his passing in June 1997
  • President of PMI Northern California Chapter
  • Co-Chair of PMI's 20th Annual Seminars/Symposium—San Francisco, 1988
  • PMI's Distinguished Contribution Award in 1990
